When I say five *RANDOM* styling hacks, I really mean like five, super random, styling hacks. These hacks might be the first go-to's for everyone, and this post might have you going "Well, DUH, everyone does that!" Or maybe they are totally new to you and will help you in a pinch.
These tricks have helped me through the toughest of times...the bestest of times.... the happiest, saddest, frustrated... kay...you get the picture.
These are my go-to's for when I'm at my wits end, or my wits beginning. Basically, when I look at my closet and I just don't know what to wear, or where to begin, these are the hacks I turn to.
1. It all starts with the You the Garment and your Psyche
This one maybe obvious, but let me tell you, when I'm standing in a shop clutching an overpriced caftan because it is "The ONE, there is nothing else like it before or after or ever to come it so *UnIqUeEE* I must own it no MATTER the cost," that same caftan gets to be a little less cute when I'm standing in front of my closet that is filled with the "same" super unique, albeit, fun pieces that Just. Don’t. WORK.
You think I would learn, and I have, but it is not without many trials and errors which required piecing back together my broken heart and wallet for a garment that didn't make the proper sacrifices for me back. Now when I come to a piece, I no longer think about it's uniqueness as the only thing it can offer me. Yes, that psychedelic colored caftan will make me happy, but it really only looks good on me when I pair it with that one item that's hidden somewhere in back of my clo- Forget it! I'll just wear my black tee / cut-off combo again and cry about how basic I am.
Finding pieces that not only speak to your psyche, but that also play well with at least three items in your closet at an arm's reach, is the criteria I use to judge a garment’s worth. Of course I slip up and sometimes still buy the overpriced item that can literally only be worn once in a blue moon, but I'm human.
2. Roll-up or Tuck-in
This trick has got me through many a frustrated hour. Sometimes, no matter what you do, your outfit just doesn’t jive. You've hit all the marks, your button down with your high-waist is supposed to be killer: Why. Isn't. It. Happening!
This is when I either roll-up or tuck-in. Rolling up the sleeves or hem of a pant can instantly transform your look. It immediately helps you to look more polished with a touch of casual. It prevents you from looking too stuffy, and is great for the hotter months when really all you want to be doing is wearing no clothing at all.
Also, tucking in a top can instantly make your look feel more put together, divide your mid-section to define a waist, and also tie two pieces together that may have not been meshing to the best of their abilities. These two simple tricks can instantly change a whole look, and make you more casual and at ease. The tucking and rolling creates clean lines and a sense of cohesion.
If that doesn't work, the outfit is just not having it.
3. Colors can work together if they are like minded
Maybe you have been wearing the same black tee and blue jean combo in like 552174632 different ways and you have just had ENOUGH. With this season I am so excited about color. While my wardrobe might not reflect that, because I have inadvertently dedicated my life to literally every black garment made or created in this world, I really have come to love a cheeky pattern or bold hue.
The best way to pair colors is to find ones that go well together. Love that bright pink and orange patterned blouse, but also want to wear those pink ruffled short? Go ahead! The pinks work together, and the orange allows a nice contrast giving a dynamic edge to the look.
Feel like that’s too much? Start with the color wheel! While this is not art class, I did learn one thing from it. Looking at the color wheel, the colors directly opposite from each other are complimentary to each other! Looking at how they are paired on the wheel can give you an idea for a more subdued pairing in real life.
Just take Lily Pulitzer pieces for example. They always look like a fun swirl of color; not like you're tripping on acid. That's 'cause girlfriend has the color wheel on speed dial.
4. Bold pieces take center stage
Another great way to make a colorful outfit happen, or to revive an outfit without committing to a chartreus shirt and turquoise pant, is by adding a statement piece here and there from time to time. Wearing an all black ensemble is great, and you know you can trust it, but sometimes you just want something more...
Adding a bold heel, necklace, earring, or even lipstick can transform your whole look. That bold piece can lend a hand to your simple ensemble and allow you to step outside your comfort zone. The easiest hack is applying a bold lipstick. You apply it, take a deep breath, walk out the door and completely forget you applied it until you look in a mirror! It allows you to play with a color, but also gives you the freedom of taking it off. No commitment! The best, and easiest, styling hack EVER.
5. Never underestimate the sophistication of simplicity
Now this hack is the one I use everyday. All the time. Like. I am so boring. After years of buying pieces that would just not play well together, I have found that there is beauty in simplicity. I'd much rather layer on necklaces over a black shift dress than try to pair my fun, but complicated, colored blouses and skirts. Starting with a simple piece allows you the ability to dress it up or down as seamlessly as you please without the hassle of trying to pair a totally different look for each separate occasion. In College a mild day of outfit changes would be three different looks in one day, it was not completely uncommon that I would change through at least six different looks. This makes me realize that my pieces really only truly pair with one specific garment, and if I want to wear a different blouse or pant, I can only pair it with that colorful cropped blouse or A-line skirt.
But at least my fashion blunders have become cautionary tales for those seeking council.
I hope that you were able to find some wisdom in these five very obvious (or maybe not so obvious?) hacks.
P.S. Also I realize those pics of me in a field are completely random, but that's just me frolicking with happiness because I have these hacks to live by 😉
